1. An example profile
A short profile at the top of your CV says who you are and what work you want. Change it to fit your own experience:
2. Duties to list
Under each job like this in your work experience, list three to five of the duties you really did:
- Lay bricks, plaster walls and lay tiles
- Mix concrete and mortar
- Read and follow building plans
- Set up and use scaffolding safely
- Use hand and power tools correctly
- Keep the site clean and follow safety rules
3. Skills and certificates
Skills employers look for in this job:
- Bricklaying
- Reading plans
- Health and safety
- Teamwork
Also list, if you have them:
- Trades you can do (bricklaying, plastering, tiling, steel fixing, carpentry)
- Working at heights or health and safety training
- Construction learnerships or trade tests
- Projects you worked on
4. Tips for Construction Worker jobs
- Name your trades and how experienced you are in each. A list like "bricklaying, plastering, tiling" tells a foreman exactly what you can do.
- Mention the projects: houses, RDP housing, schools, roads, with the dates.
- Safety training such as working at heights or first aid makes a difference on sites.
5. An example cover letter
Send a short cover letter with your CV, naming the post and the reference number from the advert:
Dear Hiring Manager
Re: Application for the post of Construction Worker
I would like to apply for the post of Construction Worker, as advertised. Please find my CV attached.
For five years I worked on housing and school projects as a bricklayer and plasterer, and I can also tile and read building plans. I work quickly and neatly, I have working-at-heights training and I follow the site safety rules.
I am available for an interview at any time and can be reached on 072 123 4567. Thank you for considering my application.
Yours faithfully
