1. An example profile
A short profile at the top of your CV says who you are and what work you want. Change it to fit your own experience:
2. Duties to list
Under each job like this in your work experience, list three to five of the duties you really did:
- Install and repair pipes, taps, toilets and geysers
- Find and fix leaks and blockages
- Read plans and measure for materials
- Install drainage and water supply systems
- Follow building regulations and safety rules
- Give customers quotes and advice
3. Skills and certificates
Skills employers look for in this job:
- Pipe fitting
- Fault finding
- Customer service
- Health and safety
Also list, if you have them:
- Trade test certificate
- PIRB registration and category
- Types of work (geysers, drainage, solar water heating)
- Driver's licence and own tools
4. Tips for Plumber jobs
- Plumbers in South Africa register with the Plumbing Industry Registration Board (PIRB). List your registration: licensed plumbers can issue plumbing Certificates of Compliance.
- Name the work you can do: geyser installations, drainage, leak detection, bathroom fitting, solar water heating.
- Customers value neat, on-time work. If you have happy-customer references, include them.
5. An example cover letter
Send a short cover letter with your CV, naming the post and the reference number from the advert:
Dear Hiring Manager
Re: Application for the post of Plumber
I would like to apply for the post of Plumber, as advertised. Please find my CV attached.
I passed my plumbing trade test and I am registered with PIRB. For four years I installed and repaired geysers, fitted bathrooms and fixed drainage problems for homes and businesses, and my clients often called me back for new work.
I am available for an interview at any time and can be reached on 072 123 4567. Thank you for considering my application.
Yours faithfully
