1. An example profile
A short profile at the top of your CV says who you are and what work you want. Change it to fit your own experience:
2. Duties to list
Under each job like this in your work experience, list three to five of the duties you really did:
- Install and repair wiring, plugs, lights and distribution boards
- Find and fix electrical faults
- Read electrical drawings and plans
- Test installations and issue COCs where qualified
- Follow SANS 10142 and safety rules
- Keep tools and equipment in good order
3. Skills and certificates
Skills employers look for in this job:
- Fault finding
- Reading electrical drawings
- Health and safety
- Problem solving
Also list, if you have them:
- Trade test certificate
- Registration as an electrical tester for single phase, installation electrician or master installation electrician
- Types of work (domestic, commercial, industrial, solar)
- Driver's licence and own tools
4. Tips for Electrician jobs
- Put your trade test and your registration category near the top. Only registered persons can issue a Certificate of Compliance (CoC), and employers know this.
- Say what kind of work you have done: house wiring, DB boards, commercial, industrial, solar and inverter installations.
- Mention safety and your fault-finding skills, with an example if you can.
5. An example cover letter
Send a short cover letter with your CV, naming the post and the reference number from the advert:
Dear Hiring Manager
Re: Application for the post of Electrician
I would like to apply for the post of Electrician, as advertised. Please find my CV attached.
I passed my electrical trade test and I am registered as an installation electrician. For five years I wired new houses, installed DB boards and solar backup systems, and found and fixed faults for commercial clients, always following the safety regulations.
I am available for an interview at any time and can be reached on 072 123 4567. Thank you for considering my application.
Yours faithfully
Thabo Mokoena
