1. An example profile
A short profile at the top of your CV says who you are and what work you want. Change it to fit your own experience:
2. Duties to list
Under each job like this in your work experience, list three to five of the duties you really did:
- Process cash, card and voucher payments accurately
- Scan items and give customers the correct change
- Balance the till at the start and end of each shift
- Handle refunds, exchanges and lay-bys according to store policy
- Pack customer purchases and offer store promotions
- Keep the till area clean and stocked with packets
- Report shortages and suspicious transactions to the supervisor
3. Skills and certificates
Skills employers look for in this job:
- Cash handling
- Customer service
- Point-of-sale (POS) systems
- Basic maths
Also list, if you have them:
- Point-of-sale (till) systems you have used
- Matric with Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy
- Customer service course, if you did one
4. Tips for Cashier jobs
- Accuracy is everything: if your till always balanced, say so. Employers look for honest people who handle money carefully.
- Name the kind of shop and how busy it was (for example "a supermarket with about 400 customers a day").
- Weekend, holiday and month-end work counts as experience: list it with the dates.
5. An example cover letter
Send a short cover letter with your CV, naming the post and the reference number from the advert:
Dear Hiring Manager
Re: Application for the post of Cashier
I would like to apply for the post of Cashier, as advertised. Please find my CV attached.
At a supermarket in Welkom I worked on the till for 18 months, handling cash, card payments, refunds and vouchers. My till balanced at the end of every shift, and I enjoy helping customers quickly and politely, even at month-end when it is busy.
I am available for an interview at any time and can be reached on 072 123 4567. Thank you for considering my application.
Yours faithfully
Thabo Mokoena
