1. An example profile
A short profile at the top of your CV says who you are and what work you want. Change it to fit your own experience:
2. Duties to list
Under each job like this in your work experience, list three to five of the duties you really did:
- Clean the house, wash and iron clothes
- Prepare meals for the family
- Look after children and help with homework
- Do grocery shopping and run errands
- Care for pets and the garden
- Keep the household safe and secure
3. Skills and certificates
Skills employers look for in this job:
- Childcare
- Cooking
- Housekeeping
- Trustworthiness
Also list, if you have them:
- Each family you worked for, with the years
- Reference letters from employers
- Childcare, cooking or first aid experience
4. Tips for Domestic Worker jobs
- List each household as a job, with the dates and what you did there: cleaning, cooking, childcare, caring for elderly people.
- Reference letters are very important for domestic work. Attach them and give phone numbers that work.
- If you can cook, look after babies or children, or drive, say so: these are often what families look for.
5. An example cover letter
Send a short cover letter with your CV, naming the post and the reference number from the advert:
Dear Hiring Manager
Re: Application for the post of Domestic Worker
I would like to apply for the post of Domestic Worker, as advertised. Please find my CV attached.
I worked for the Mokoena family for five years and before that for another family for three years, doing the cleaning, laundry, ironing and cooking, and looking after two young children. Both families can be contacted as references.
I am available for an interview at any time and can be reached on 072 123 4567. Thank you for considering my application.
Yours faithfully
Thabo Mokoena
